An exhibition about Tokyo Suburbia
東京サバービアの展覧会
SUBURBIA.
Being the daily reality for millions of people it is surprising
how little relevance is attached to Tokyo Suburbia in media,
urban research, by the government, etc. By its 'incredible
normalness', it manages to escape our attention, making it
a blind spot on our imaginative urban map. Tokyo only seems
to officially exist as its aspiring image of 'bright lights, big city'.
This exhibition is showing the 'other Tokyo';
the landscape reflecting its mass-culture:
SUBURBIA.
Housing over one half percent of the entire world population,
Tokyo has become the biggest city in the world. Since the
sixties it has found itself in an explosive process of urban
expansion, thereby ignoring municipal borders and natural
obstacles. The mercilessly conquered farmland has been
transformed into an urban landscape nobody could ever have
imagined, let alone controlled. What once was a side-effect of
explosive economic growth has become Tokyo's mass-reality:
SUBURBIA.
何百万人の人々にとって日々の現実であるにも関わらず、
メディアや政府の都市研究等による東京郊外に関する情報は驚く程ない。
東京郊外は「 ごく 普通である」という 理由 で、 都市の空想地図
の盲点となり、どうにか私たちの注意をそらしているよう だ 。
そして 東京は「明るい光、巨大な都市」というイメージ の中にのみ存在
しているかのようだ。 この企画では、「もうひとつの東京」、マス・カルチャーを
反映する風景の展示を試みる。すなわち、東京郊外の姿を。
サバービア。
世界の人口の0.5％を超えるという意味で、東京は世界で一 番大きな
都市である。６０年代から東京は市営の境界や自 然の障害を無視
しながら絶えまなく膨張をし続けてきた。 容赦なく侵略された農地が
都市の容貌へと変貌を遂げたこ とをだれが想像できただろうか。
またコントロールすらで きなかった。 かつて経済の急成長による
副作用であった都市の広がりは 東京のマス・リアリティとなっている。
